Yes I KNOW that Cephalopods AREN’T fish! Cephalopod means ‘head footed’ because the feet of the creature emerge from the head. Over the years I have mosaiced many octopus and quite a few squid so I thought it might be fun to compose a piece using all four cephalopods: the octopus, squid, cuttlefish and nautilus. The octopus and squid are admittedly very cartoon-like because of the eyes, but are in fact very closely inspired by similar fourth century Roman examples in the floor in Aquileia, northern Italy. intrigued? Then maybe you should join me on my annual mosaic tour of the mosaics of northern Italy - click here for the link!
