Suggested reading:
Guide Books:
‘Dorling Kindersley Guide to Venice & the Veneto’
‘The Rough Guide to Italy’ and ‘Cadogan Guide to Bologna and Emilia Romana’ by Dana Facaros and Michael Pauls
Serious:
‘Venice’ by James Morris –historical but very entertaining and readable from the great man himself – before he became a woman!
‘Venice’ and ‘A Short History of Byzantium’ by John Julius Norwich This is now available on audio books from your local library – this is a definitive work and a really good one to listen to if you want to ‘bone up’ beforehand.
Entertaining:
Steven Saylor – ‘Thursday Next’ -Italian detective story – available on audio books from your library.Donna Leon – ‘Aqua Alter’ ‘Fatal Remedies’ – these are 2 examples from a series of Venetian detective stories. Very atmospheric – this will get you in the mood for the trip. Also available on audio books from your library. (Clipper Audio)
Dan Browne – ‘The Da Vinci Code’ mentions Botticelli and his involvement with all that conspiracy nonsense. More to the point, you’ll be able to see his two great masterpieces – ‘The Birth of Venus’ & ‘Primavera’ in the Uffici when we visit Florence.
Films
‘Death in Venice’ Visconti classic with Dirk Bogarde based on the novel by Thomas Mann. Slow but poignant beautifully shot.
‘Don’t Look Now’ Donald Sutherland & Julie Christie in this fabulous thriller based on the short story by Daphne du Maurier. This shows Donald Sutherland as a painter – restoring murals in Venice – great stuff.
‘Hotel’ dir: Mike Newell. A film crew try to make a film based on Marlowe set in Venice. Weird but interesting.
‘The Da Vinci Code’ err… see above!
NB!
Please note that not included in the course fee are flights, lunch and evening meals.
