The mosaic above was inspired by visiting the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
The first time one visits any museum there is a tendency to run around like a headless chicken, trying to see all that it has to offer. Of course it is important to know the scope and range of the collection, but I find that in trying to see everything one ends up remembering nothing. My method is to take notes on the initial visit and on subsequent visits to concentrate on one subject only. For example, on my last visit to the V & A, I wanted to study their extensive collection of Majolica ware. Thanks to this limited personal brief I didn’t feel pressurised in to feeling that I was missing any of the other exhibits. I stayed for just over an hour and as a result took in quite a lot, making notes and sketching details as visual reminders where necessary. If I’d have stayed six times longer, I really believe that I would have probably only have achieved twice as much. I find these short bursts more productive, more enjoyable and more memorable as I recall that ‘that was the day when I looked at the Majolica.’
