The recent series of mosaics for The Riverhead School in Kent involved enabling the pupils, who were only 6 years old – to draw onto pre-rolled out clay. After these had been cut out and bisque fired, Martin returned to the school with non-toxic glazes – the ones that you get in ‘paint your own pottery shops’ for the children to glaze their pieces. The mosaic triptych shows a beach scene at low, mid and high tide. The children’s brief was to make elements that are in the air, go on or in the sea and on the beach. Thus wonderful birds, ships, swimmers, fish, octopus, seaweed, shells, sand castles and children playing beach activities were all made.
