For many years Martin Cheek and Andrew Higgins have been running mosaic courses from Martin’s beautiful studio in Flint House in Broadstairs on the Kentish coast in the UK. By popular demand Martin and Andrew have been asked to run a mosaic course in Turkey. Istanbul seemed to ideal place to run this course, having fabulous classical mosaics and a rich Byzantine heritage.
The course is both a creative and relaxing holiday experience. Martin and Andrew will teach for 4 hours daily. There will be at least two informal demonstrations incorporating direct and indirect mosaics as well as presentations covering Martin’s personal mosaic work. There is a lot of opportunity for one to one tuition. Another great feature about this course is meeting your fellow course participants from all over the world.
Cost: 11 days, 10 nights mosaic course @ €2130.00 per person including accommodation
OR 11 days, 10 nights mosaic course @ €1130.00 per person NOT including accommodation.
(In other words you can find your own cheaper accommodation nearby if you wish)
Non participating partners in double room @ €1250.00
A deposit of €500.00 (non refundable) to be paid on booking.
This price is based on taking a single room with a view.
If you take a double with NO view then it is an extra 60 Euros
If you take a double with a view then it is an extra 175 Euros
If you share a twin with a view you save 225 Euros each
Please note that the airfare is not included as part of the course price.
The suggested outward flight from UK will be British Airways Flight BA0678 from London Heathrow to Istanbul – departing @ 09.50 and arriving @ 15.35.
The suggested return flight from Istanbul will be British Airways Flight BA0680 from Istanbul to London Heathrow– departing @ 16.15 and arriving @ 22.10
If we can all be on the same flights then it makes the pick up at the airport much easier for everyone.

Day 1 – Thursday 8 November
09.50: Outward Flight BA0678 from London Heathrow to Istanbul IST airport.
15.35: arrive at Istanbul Airport. Get taxis for the short ride to the Hotel
17.00: Arrive at Ayasofya Konaklari Hotel. Allocation of rooms, settle in.
20.00: Arrival dinner in a nearby restaurant.
Day 2 - Friday 9 November
9.00-13.00: Mosaic Workshop #1.
Setting up of studio space. Allocation of work stations.
Talk 1: Martin will talk about the production of Millefiori, Coloured Smalti, Gold leaf Smalti
13.00-14.00: Lunch provided by the Caferega Medresesa
14.00 – 19.00: In the afternoon it is suggested that we all visit the Grand Bazaar in order to get the flavour of Istanbul and seek inspiration for our mosaics..
Day 3 - Saturday 10 November
9.00-13.00: Mosaic Workshop #2
Talk 2: Martin will talk about the production of his own hand made glass fusions.
He will then demonstrate cutting techniques for glass smalti..
Martin and Andrew will discuss your design possibilities with you.
Work commences on your mosaics.
13.00-14.00: Lunch provided by the Caferega Medresesa
14.00 – 19.00: In the afternoon you can continue to work (unassisted) or relax.
Day 4 - Sunday 11 November
9.00-13.00: Mosaic Workshop #3.
Talk 3: Martin will give a talk about how using various opus in your mosaics can help to create movement.
Continue to work on your mosaics assisted by Martin and Andrew.
13.00-14.00: Trip to The Chora to see the wonderful Byzantine Mosaics.
Day 5 - Monday 12 November
9.00-13.00: Mosaic Workshop #4.
Talk 4: Martin will talk about colour and contrast in your mosaics.
Continue to work on your mosaics assisted by Martin and Andrew.
14.00 – 19.00: In the afternoon you can continue to work (unassisted) or relax.
Day 6 - Tuesday 13 November
9.00-13.00: Mosaic Workshop #5.
Talk 5: Martin will talk about Community Mosaics and sculptural works. How to make 3-Dimensional mosaics
Continue to work on your mosaics assisted by Martin and Andrew.
13.00-14.00: Lunch provided by the Caferega Medresesa
14.00 – 19.00: Visit to the Mosaic Museum to see the Roman Mosaics.
Day 7 - Wednesday 14 November
9.00-13.00: Mosaic Workshop #6
Talk 6: How to develop your portfolio and price your work professionally
13.00-14.00: Lunch provided by the Caferega Medresesa
14.00 – 19.00: In the afternoon you can continue to work (unassisted) or relax.
Day 8 - Thursday 15 November
9.00-13.00: Mosaic Workshop #7.
Talk 7: Martin will talk about the design, fabrication and installation of his Barbados floor.
Continue to work on your mosaics assisted by Martin and Andrew.
13.00-14.00: Lunch provided by the Caferega Medresesa
14.00 – 19.00: Trip to Hagia Sophia to see the wonderful Byzantine Mosaics.
Day 9 - Friday 16 November
9.00-13.00: Mosaic Workshop #8.
Talk 8: Martin will talk about inspiration, the creative process and how he works
Continue to work on your mosaics assisted by Martin and Andrew.
13.00-14.00: Lunch provided by the Caferega Medresesa
14.00 – 19.00: In the afternoon you can continue to work (unassisted) or relax.
Day 10 - Saturday 17 November
9.00-13.00: Mosaic Workshop #9.
Finish work on your mosaics.
Tidy up and prepare for the exhibition.
13.00-14.00: Lunch provided by the Caferega Medresesa
14.00: Exhibition of the produced mosaics with drinks and nibbles.
Martin and Andrew will evaluate the week’s work.
Day 11 - Sunday 28 November
10.00 - 12.00: Visit to the Spice Bazaar to buy your teas, exotic spices and souvenirs.
12.30-13.30: Lunch provided by the Caferega Medresesa
14.00: Pick up from hotel to Istanbul IST airport.
16.40 Return flight BA0680 to London Heathrow arrives 22.10
